Demur caught up with Mayeul Reignault, designer and finalist of the Festival International de Mode et de Photographie à HYÈRES. We found out about what makes him different as a designer. Find out more about Mayeul’s designs and inspiration below.
What does it mean for you to be a finalist of the Festival International de Mode et de Photographie à HYÈRES competition?
It’s great! This festival is a huge opportunity to show our work directly to professional people that are totally unable to be reached in any other context. I think it is a good way to show people we exist! And the festival itself is a very nice event. Just being there was really enjoyable.
Why do you think you were chosen as one of the finalists?
I think you should ask the judges that question 🙂
I guess the delicacy and the apparent fragility of my pieces was appealing to them. And maybe the fact I am an industrial designer. I would approach jewellery in a completely new manner.

Your collection is influenced by paintings seen on native populations such as the Omo Valley in South Ethiopia. Have you got any connections to Ethiopia and why was that your influence?
Actually I have none! Except the fact that I took the inspiration from the gesture in the paintings these native populations make on themselves and that it is a practice that is universal, that has been done since time immemorial and everybody can understand. Nowadays you have only a few people in the world who still do it with such an expressive and instinctive way, but it is something really common to everybody.
What are your plans for progressing your brands after this competition?
The festival is the beginning of everything. I would love to create a brand to sell it and propose other collections after that. The reactions of the public and the judges will probably help me a lot go to another level.
