Whenyoung are an exciting indie band who first met in Limerick and decided to make music after bonding over a bottle of Vodka…as you do. The guys have been busy taking their talents on the road supporting the likes of Dream Wife, Declan McKenna, The Vaccines, as well as hanging with celebrities in Dublin where they performed at Shane Mcgowan’s 60th birthday celebration with Nick Cave, Johnny Depp and Sinead O’Connor in attendance. We were delighted Aoife Power (Vocals/ Bass), Niall Burns (Guitar) and Andrew Flood (Drums) took time out of their busy schedule to share their favourite new tracks this week.
Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread – When
It has a nostalgic feel. It’s great how it stays on the same low baritone riff and it has these beautiful, bustling drums. Gives you a feeling of being on a train heading for the coast.
Dev Hynes – Charcoal Baby
He seamlessly blends several genres and instruments into one song. Love how the dry, picked guitar is prominent all the way through the verses, along with infrequent police sirens.
Kira – If It Makes You Feel Better
Such a subtle yet strong vocal hook in the chorus.
Interpol – No 10
My favourite part is the guitar intro. However, the song itself has all the swagger you’d expect from Interpol.
Chvrches/Wednesday Campanella, Out Of My Head
Typically absorbing Chvrches melodies and the Scottish/Japanese combo actually works pretty well too, although I’d love to know what the lyrics are!
Anna Calvi – Hunter
What a voice and delivery, combined with the cut through guitar parts after the first chorus. So good.
Spiritualized – Here Comes (The Road) Let’s Go
Such a feel-good, driving, journey type song. That’s a necessity in any compilation.
