Winner of the Fashion Scout AW19 coveted Merit Award, Tolu Coker presented her collection entitled Juvenile Consciousness to a fashion week crowd at the Freemasons’ Hall. This award follows Tolu’s winning streak as she has recently created a trend in itself of collecting awards for her Eponymous brand. Tolu was recently shortlisted as a finalist in the ASOS Fashion Discovery 2018 and is also a previous winner of The Diesel Award, The Vogue Talents Award and The ITS Time For Coffee Award.
The London based designer and illustrator has previously collaborated with Dr Martens, Swatch and illy. Tolu can also count Rihanna, Emily Sande, AJ Tracey, Tiwa Savage, Ms Banks and Demi Lavato amongst her clients and we are certain after her debut show the list is set to grow with more high-profile names.
Tolu’s collection at her debut show featured reworked denims, recycled leathers and re-used plastic and lace scraps are paired alongside striking and daring silhouettes, bold illustrative prints/embroideries and a playground of textures to add a youthful, contemporary and luxurious flair to each piece. Some of the pieces from the collection were inspired by extracts from Tolu’s father’s diary.
Tolu aims to showcase her identity throughout her work by embracing dual heritage and cultures being born in Nigeria and living in Spain before moving to London where she completed her studies at Central Saint Martins.
