Meet Lily Moore, the 19-year-old from Brighton with a voice that sounds far beyond her years. I was lucky enough to sit down with Lily ahead of her biggest show to date, supporting Vance Joy at the O2 Academy Brixton. Talking to Lily about the tour ahead and how she got to this point, I got to know a little more about who she is.
While recalling about how she started off busking on the streets of Brighton, Lily explained the initial spur that started it all for her. At 15 Lily wanted to make some pocket money. She was given the opportunity to do just that when she was asked to do the ironing at home. Realising that ironing was not for her, Lily decided to take it into her own hands and went down to a well known busking spot in Brighton. Lily only had about two or three songs at the time, ‘so I would just do Wonderwall like 6 times in a row’ Lily explained. Despite this, she began to make money from it. Lily used to bring her friends with her whenever she went busking, and her friends were only too happy to her spend her riches. Reminiscing about this experience, Lily says ‘My mum would park at the top of the street just to make sure I was ok and all the while I never knew she was there watching me.’
Speaking about the upcoming European tour with Vance Joy, I asked her what date she was most looking forward to? ‘Paris’ she said with no hesitation. ‘My best friend is coming to see me there as she has a day off.’
Having spoken to her before the show, there was a certain amount of serialism to think of her standing on the stage that she herself said was ‘a bit mad to play on, I’ve been coming here for years to see loads of gigs.’ As soon as Lily stepped out and began to sing, the funny, chatty 19-year-old I had been chatting to, disappeared and emerged as a powerful, soulful and incomprehensibly talented young woman with a voice that is truly outstanding; rising like a phoenix from the ashes.
Listening to her set, she played a few of the tracks that will be on her upcoming EP and I can tell you now, she only has gems lined up for this spring release. Her set consisted of consistent beautiful songs that further proved just how talented Lily Moore truly is. If you haven’t been lucky enough to get tickets to see her on either of her upcoming tours do not despair, Lily will be playing both Live at Leeds and The Great Escape festivals this summer and I can promise you she is not one you want to miss this year.
