With the anticipation of Rihanna’s 9th studio album expected this year, we can’t help but be in awe of what she has achieved since her last studio album ‘Anti’ and of course throughout her career. Rihanna’s last album was released through her own record label Westbury Road which also happens to be the street Rihanna grew up on. Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty make up line was a huge success with a shade for every skin tone something that the bigger well-established brands had not addressed. The Savage X Fenty lingerie collection was even more inclusive with 90 pieces of lingerie, sleepwear, loungewear and accessories for women of different sizes and shapes. Rihanna managed to generate just over $1 billion with her collaboration with sportswear brand Puma.
There is no limit to Rihanna’s talents we saw display outstanding acting skills in Ocean’s 8 and Guava Island which is currently being filmed. It is no wonder Rihanna was appointed by the government of Barbados to be an Ambassador-at-Large, with special duties of promoting “education, tourism and investment for the island a huge achievement in itself.
So how did it all come together? There is no doubt Rihanna has worked hard to get to where she is. We have heard of the saying, it’s all about who you know. Back in 2003 when Rihanna and her two classmates formed a girl group and managed to get an audition with record producer Evan Rogers who was on holiday in Barbados it was about who this guy knew that helped kick-start Rihanna’s career. After impressing Evan during the audition Rihanna recorded a demo for Evans who then sent the demo to Def Jam Recordings and the demo ended up in the hands of Jay Z who was President and Chief executive officer (CEO) of Def Jam Records at the time.
Some people may feel guilty for using their connections to get ahead of the game, it may feel like cheating to some, but little do you know, you are losing out. The more people you know the further you can go, the more you can achieve. Networking does increase your net worth. Networking is as simple as getting yourself out there and in front of the right people just like Rihanna did.
It’s not even about how many people you know. The value of the people you know is important and of course, they have to be relevant to what you are trying to do. Rihanna putting herself in front of someone who is in the mining business would not have had the same effect as meeting Evan Rogers who was in the music business. How are these people relevant to your cause? Do they align with your purpose? There is no use making connections with people who are going to distract you from the goal. People who are going to divert your focus elsewhere. It only took for Rihanna to meet one-person Evan Rogers which then kicked off her phenomenal career and her empire.
I’ve always thought of myself as an introvert. I don’t mind people, but I prefer to stay in my pyjamas working (I don’t really watch much tv), eating and staying in the warm. I’ve connected with many people online and at the various events, I have actually bothered to attend. Networking is about progressing ideas and it only takes meeting one person. I plan to do more of that from now on in the hope to build a bank account that matches Rihanna’s.
