Duo songwriter, James Low and vocalist, Ade Omotayo hail from East London and they are coming to us as Equals=. Having performed at Croatia’s Dimensions festival and run the gamut of London’s gig circuit, from Dalston basement clubs to Koko, the V&A, and the Albert Hall, the guys have prepared an exciting debut EP due for release early this year. Both James and Ade spent years perfecting their craft working with other artists. Ade was once a backing singer for Amy Winehouse and James has worked with various bands including members of Submotion Orchestra.
How did you two know you would work well together?
We didn’t to be honest. We met through a mutual friend after I first moved to London. We hooked up for a session and quietly clicked. We’re different enough not to clash but similar enough to make it work.
How’s the EP coming along?
Great, we’ve recorded the vocals for the last track on the album. It’s satisfying to see it finally come together.
We were contemplating what to call it. One of the tracks on the album is called ‘Hi-Def Retro’ which sums up the theme of the record – around the sense that there are no new ideas, just glossy versions of the old ones – but we didn’t want to privilege it above the other by making it the title track, so we are calling it ‘1997’, which feels like the year that history stopped being made.
What is your working relationship like? How do you resolve any conflicts?
Well we’re two grown men so we ignore it until it becomes totally unbearable, and comes out in irritable sly comments until we finally get really drunk and declare our undying love for each other and the project.
What track from ‘1997’ do you think people will have on repeat?
The first track on the album – ‘Triumph’, if you don’t like triumph you don’t like equals, and that’s cool, but we’re never gonna be close
What have you got up your sleeve for 2018?
Our album launch at Ace Hotel in Shoreditch London on March 14th. We’ve got a whole host of very special people lined up and hope to be pressing a very limited run of special edition vinyl to sell exclusively on the night.
