Lagos to Manchester: Afrobeats Takes Centre Stage for the MOBOs’ 30th Anniversary

The sound of Lagos isn’t just “crossing over” anymore, it’s setting the global tempo. As the MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards prepares to celebrate its landmark 30th anniversary, the 2026 nominations list reads like a Who’s Who of Nigerian musical royalty, proving that the Afrobeats era is far from over; it’s just getting started.

From the high-fashion aesthetics of the “Sabi Girl” herself to the legendary status of the “Starboy,” Nigeria’s creative heavyweights are dominated the conversation ahead of the ceremony on March 26, 2026, at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena.

If 2026 belongs to anyone, it’s Ayra Starr. The 23-year-old powerhouse is not just a musical force but a certified fashion icon, recently confirming her relocation to New York City to further cement her international footprint.

Starr has pulled off a rare feat, securing nominations in two major categories, Best African Music Act and Best International Act. In the latter, she finds herself in the company of global titans like Cardi B, Gunna, and Kehlani. Her double-nomination serves as a testament to her transition from a breakout star to one of Africa’s most influential young voices in music and culture.

The nomination list serves as a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s depth of talent. Joining the fray are the architects of the modern Afrobeats sound, Davido, and Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Rema and Adekunle Gold.

Since its inception in 1996, the MOBOs have been the pulse of Black music in the UK and beyond. This year’s ceremony is set to be a historic intersection of music, fashion, and industry excellence.

“2026 is extra special as the MOBO Organisation marks 30 years of shaping culture, championing talent, and creating unforgettable moments,” the organisers shared in a recent statement.

For fans of fashion and culture, the red carpet at the Co-op Live Arena is expected to be a masterclass in “Afro-fusion” style, reflecting a year where African designers and artists have dictated the global aesthetic.
