Adidas teams up for the first time with one of the hottest rising stars in the global fashion scene, China’s very own Angel Chen
Angel Chen is quickly becoming one of the brightest creative talents to emerge from China’s nascent fashion scene. The name behind the brand, Angel Chen, moved to London at the age of 17 to study at the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design. Angel cut her teeth working for a number of high-profile brands in New York. From the moment she first showed her graduate collection however it has been clear that Angel possesses a singular fashion voice that could only come from the distinctive way that she fuses her experience of Eastern and Western culture. This remains the case with each new collection she puts out under the eponymous brand founded in 2014, which she describes as “innovative, colorful, unrestrained and expressive.”
Comprised of eight new women’s footwear models, the new capsule collection channels a sophisticated yet eye-catching aesthetic capturing Chen’s unmistakable way through bold and colorful graphics.
These four words could equally be applied to Angel Chen’s first team-up with adidas, which takes the form of four new footwear styles. Each is presented in two colorways and, in their brightly playful execution, channel the mood and look of 80s and 90s fashion and creative scenes from around the world.
Available in a black and in a white version, the Sleek Super, as its name suggests, features a minimalist leather upper that has been fused to an oversized sole. Angel Chen renders the outsole semi-translucent, through which great splashes of colour, inspired by Chinese calligraphy, can be seen on the midsole.
Chinese calligraphy also provides the inspiration for two new takes on the rugged all-weather Kiellor shoe. Here, that inspiration manifests itself on the tongue and the vamp, appearing across a bright blue iteration and a youthful, multicoloured iteration– each one as eye-catching as the other. Bold colorblocking characterises Angel’s new Ozweegos, perfect echo to the brand’s iconic and vivid approach as well as reference to traditional Chinese Martial Arts, one of the most influential sports in China.
