Busty & The Bass Demur Decks Takeover

As we begin to recover from licking our wounds from what has been a historical yet disturbing few weeks of revelation, we have Julian Trivers, drummer of Canadian funk/soul collective, Busty and the Bass taking over our Demur Decks. We thought the 8 piece collective who are passionate about musical and cultural education in schools, could teach us a thing a two about what makes a perfect playlist.

Grimes – New Gods

I’m a huge fan of this whole album. Grimes manages to transport the listener to a different universe. I think the thing that made me connect with this track is the haunting, spaced-out production along with her angelic vocals. It’s slow and dark, but also uplifting.

Jay Electronica – The Blinding (feat. Travis Scott)

This track is massive. It’s the type of track that would stun a festival crowd into chaos. I’ve always been into super-wide, distorted hip-hop tracks. Tracks produced by Timbaland and Swizz Beats (who co-produced this track) inspired me to start producing my own music in high school.

ROSALÍA – PIENSO EN TU MIRÁ – Cap.3: Celo

I’ve always had a passion for latin music. I grew up listening to a lot of salsa. I love that latin music is becoming more popular in North America. I dig that this track is sophisticated rhythmically but also has the catchy sing-along qualities of a pop record.

Kaytranada – I Need It (feat. Masego)

Kaytranada’s production has always mystified me. I always wondered how he got his drums so loud. It’s cool to see how huge he’s become over the years. We used to see him play in small clubs back in 2013, while we were still in University in Montreal. Like every other one of his productions, this track just grooves super hard. Also, it was mixed by our producer Neal Pogue.

Robyn – Send to Robin Immediately

This was definitely my favorite album of 2018. The production is perfect. Robyn’s vocals are perfect. Her vocal phrasing/arranging is also super interesting. Repeated phrases and dope reverbed out effects. Also mixed by Neal Pogue. Shoutout Neal!

A$AP Rocky – Babushka Boi

Another big one. This track is like a modern take on the Houston rap sound that I listened to a lot of in High School. Tracks like “Swang” by Trae Tha Truth and “Still Tippin” by Mike Jones. Slow, wide, hard beats.

FKA Twigs – fallen alien

This whole album is amazing but this track sticks out for me. Love the juxtaposition of the aggressive industrial production in the verses and the stripped piano/vocal in the chorus. This record is smart, futuristic, and raw. I’ve been looking for new music that takes chances, something that is in a world of its own, and this is a perfect example of that.

Burial – Claustro

Burial’s music affects me differently from every other artist. The affected vocal chops mixed with the ambient sound snippets creates a super vivid setting in my head. I love the hypnotic dance vibe on this track. Also the fact that Burial is so mysterious and has never toured makes me that much more interested in his music.

The new single from Busty & The Bass, ‘Out Of Love’ ft Macy Gray is out June 24th. It’s taken from their upcoming album, out in July.
