Bad Honey – Circles
A fully animated, illustrated and visual treat. Bad Honey are back with their latest single ‘Circles’, a perfect blend of their signature vocals and lo-fi electronic beats. Created and edited by Michele Stella, Bad Honey cleverly use motifs of Chinese culture to take us on a visual journey through the meaning of this beautifully and delicately composed track. With the central colours of the video being yellow (typically signifying earth in Chinese culture) and red (signifying fire), there is a clear theme of culture and throughout as they seamlessly combine the lyrical content and visual display with subtle hints to cyclical nature of it all.
Jett Kwong – Tokyo Bath
Check out the new visuals from experimental pop artist Jett Kwong. Entitled ‘Tokyo Bath’ the track is a fantasy of transcendence. Imagine an outsider at a Hollywood party, alone and soaking in an idyllic Japanese onsen. In the end, transcendence is the fantasy itself.
Jett Kwong uses stunning Chinese guzheng to create her signature multi-faceted sound twinkling with delicate synthesizers and haunting, ethereal vocals.
American Studies – Panama City Blues
American Studies’ debut single, ‘Panama City Blues,’ reimagines 1960s band Larry and The Loafers’ song of the same name, transforming it into a beach banger for spring break. American Studies worked with the master recording of the original song to manipulate and sample its sound, capturing the duality of the song which describes a heartbreak through a beach party atmosphere. Now the beach and all its glory reminds the ex-lovers of each other, so they choose to drink the Panama City blues away.
Muka Vhatti – Grey
Perth native Muka Vhatti offers “a synthetic tune of fighting addiction and coping with pain” on his brand new single ‘Grey’. Jumping on a beat from Perth producer Akuyaku, Muka brings to life his unique vision of contemporary emo rap which he titles ‘Ocean Trap’.
In the past year, Muka Vhatti has found his own lane of success, winning the acclaimed Australian Uni Sounds competition and had the hounor of joining fellow Perth rapper Arno Faraji on tour. 2020 is looking to be a big year for the rapper with plans to release his long-anticipated debut EP and continue growing his Ocean TTrap brand.
Alexandra Lost – Modern Feelings
Alexandra Lost’s latest single, ‘Modern Feelings,’ is a call to just get in the car and get over it. It sounds like fireworks at dusk, as orchestral pop meets smooth funk. Filmed in Saint Augustine Beach, Florida, the song’s video chases poolside mojitos with a shot of psychedelia. The creation of the song started when Simon built a funk-style beat out of samples, overlaying an orchestra from an old French chanson record on top. This inspired Jane to come up with a vocal melody right away, before we crowdsourced an instrumental solo from Facebook for Simon’s birthday. Out of the stuff they received, Alexandra Lost combined a dissonant guitar lick with a spaced-out harmonica jam and voilà, the song was complete!
Bree Runway – Apeshit
Fast-rising pop phenomenon, Bree Runway unveils fierce new single, ‘Apeshit’. The track follows the release of Bree’s debut EP, ‘Be Runway’ released late 2019 which prompted Dazed to include the E.P in their 10 best moments of the year and for Paper to name ‘2ON’ as one of their tracks of 2019. Produced by Moon Willis, ‘Apeshit’ reiterates the message that ran through the Be Runway EP; one of empowerment, unfaltering self-belief and fearless creativity. Inspired by a comment on YouTube, it fully consolidates Bree’s growing reputation as one of the most exciting new artists around, with her intelligence, fierce championing of individualism and defiant confidence making her the perfect pop star and role model for 2020.
