Bravely continuing to pave the way for LGBTQ pride, Australian alt-pop outfit Cub Sport finally confirm details of their anticipated fourth album, ‘LIKE NIRVANA,’ out May 8th to be released through the band’s own label, Cub Sport Records/Believe. Ahead of that, the band have released the first single from the project, ‘Confessions’ out now.
What we love about Cub Sport is that they are a completely independent, self-managed four-piece, continuously breaking barriers, evolving and carving out a space of their own that has never before been occupied in pop music. Who better to take over our decks than such a demur bunch.
Swim Deep – To Feel Good
The first time I heard this song was in the tour van as we were driving from Stockholm to Denmark. We were driving along the edge of a beautiful lake, I was eating a vegan magnum and it was a real moment. This song is so classic and beautiful.
Mura Masa – Teenage Headache Dreams (with Ellie Rowsell/Wolf Alice)
I loooove the new Mura Masa album! The huge sonic shift from the last album is so exciting and so fresh. This song is really uplifting in a chill/gritty way and Ellie’s vocals are so heavenly.
flowerkid – boy with the winfields and the wild heart
This song is pure and full of heart in every way – the instrumentation, the vocals, the lyrics.
Mallrat – Drive Me Round
I’m Mallrat’s #1 stan. Her voice, her lyrics, her production. Everything Grace does hits me right in the heart. She’s an incredibly special artist and I can’t wait to watch her take over the world.
Cub Sport – Air
I wrote and recorded this song at home between tours last year. The synth and drum sounds feel so expressive to me – when I was recording it I’d have my hand on my chest listening back like damn. I was on vocal rest while I was working on it and I was really excited to add vocals but when I did, I realised that the song said more before I added lyrics. It’s really emotive and vast as an instrumental. It feels uplifting, energising and emotional in a really refreshing way. The music video is also pretty wild and worth watching.
Frank Ocean – DHL
Frank is a genius and only releases masterpieces. This song is so woozy and chill – it’s perfect smoking music.
Joji – Run
I really wasn’t expecting this from Joji but I’m so glad this is where he’s gone musically. The guitar sounds are so nostalgic to me and I love how his vocal almost sounds classical in parts with his beautiful vibrato. This song is a massive grower so make sure you give it plenty of repeat listens.
Vegyn – Debold
I can’t remember where I first came across this song but I added it to its own Spotify playlist and kept coming back to it ‘cause the vibe is just so unique and beautiful.
FKA twigs – sad day
Twigs is the definition of an iconic artist. I’m obsessed with her music, her voice, her energy, her physical expression of her music in dance, her style and fashion, her whole vision. She’s one of the most amazing artists of our time. This is one of my fav songs from her Magdalene record.
