Mia Meets Flowvers, Pompey’s Most Exciting New Band

I was lucky enough to head down to Portsmouth this week to meet the boys behind Flowvers, Pompey’s most exciting new band, ahead of their Single “She Don’t Talk About It” released today.

Picking me up from the station, instantly the boys seemed funny, charming and proving exactly why they are quickly rising to success. We sat down at Portsmouth’s ‘Pie and Vinyl’ to talk music (and just about everything else) before heading to the seafront arcades and their rehearsal studio. Originally formed by Matisse (Frontman) and Henry (Bassist) while working on another project, an instant musical connection developed. They then brought in Stan (Guitar), an old school friend of Matisse and Connor (Drums) and BOOM, Flowvers was born.

Signed to Big Hug Management, these boys have quickly gained traction with over 350k streams, a headline gig at Wedgerooms (12th of October) an Autumn tour and some very exciting projects in the pipeline. Chatting to Matisse and Stan about who their inspiration is, they were quick to outline that it comes from “the whole 2013 indie scene” (Jaws, Peace, Swim Deep). However, Stan explained that they “write more songwriter-y songs, as in we could play them acoustically as well [unlike a lot of the music that came out of the 2013 scene]. A lot of bands go for that big pop sound that doesn’t necessarily last”.

Whilst we discussed the band and their future endeavours, I was keen to understand how it is they have come about creating their sound which is so reminiscent of the indie boom they take influence from, yet utterly strident to their peers. When I asked Matisse who does the songwriting and bears the brunt of the workload, I was given an answer that is unusual to many; “it’s changing. We don’t actually know. Lyrically I write, but the music is completely equal. We will have a nuance of what we want it to sound like, and then go into the rehearsal studio at Casemates and work together as a band until we find the sound. It’s always easier to hear it that way”.

Matisse went on to explain that “A lot of the music I listen to is very 90’s dreamy, shoegaze etc. Originally we were branded as that but we’ve always tried to stay fluid with our genre. We are a pop band; but we try to write different songs and not follow a structure, there is no formula to how we write.” While they might not follow a particular formula, there is clearly something magical happening. As we headed into their rehearsal studio, I was about to learn how it is they create this magic.

Whilst I can’t disclose most of what went on in the rehearsal room, I can say it was filled with a truly exciting discussion of future plans and gigs. On top of that, I got to hear their upcoming single “She Don’t Talk About It” and new material they have been working on. They have taken the already distinct Flowvers sound and made it more explosive, anthemic and all-round brilliant whilst refining it with their quickly maturing ear and style. I still maintain that if you’re looking for the next big indie band, you have found them.
