Monshine Moods: Grits, An Angry Playlist

Niceties have gotten us nowhere! The ice caps are melting! The internet controls our souls! The government has shut down! Long has the time for being polite and civil passed, there’s no more space to be complacent in this world, and it’s time to take some righteous stand against the systems which oppress us!

Unite! Together let’s knock the bourgeoisie off of their pedestal and make them see the mess they’ve created!

I mean, in theory, that is… I still have rent to pay and rioting doesn’t really fit in with my plans this weekend, so I’ll there in spirit. But, in earnest, the people are famished for a change that never comes, and this famine has resulted in some tension and a national anxiety. However, these artists are here to feed whatever suppressed anger you have barking and snarling within you!

The 1975 – People

An interesting departure from the band’s themes and styling that’s become totally predictable with some sort of compositionally juxtaposing twist. But, when I heard this for the first time I was taken entirely and genuinely shocked, like Healey himself sucker-punched me from the side of the head with some brass knuckles. Anyone else excited for their next album?

Skating Polly – Flyer

A fun track, ironically about feeling completely depleted of energy and agency, with quirky lyrics sung in a cutesy breathy cadence. As the song develops the tone becomes harsher, and full of energy, becoming a cacophony of trembling guitars, juxtaposing modes, and yelping that’s sure to get you moshing in you pyjamas.

Hands Off Gretel – Kiss Me Girl

Who here hasn’t experimented with their sexuality at Uni? This track is reminiscent of those times shrouded in a hard rock grittiness evoking smudged lipsticks, tattoos, and ripped leggings, feeling like making out in a dive bar’s bathroom in rebellion to nothing at all. Hand’s Off Gretel’s work always projects some long loss angst that I’m sure our readers need to revel in every once in a while.

Nova Twins – Devil’s Face

This South-London duo was popping off back in 2017 with the release of their self-titled debut packed full of growling and harrowing instrumentation and vocals but suddenly dropped off of the radar. Although, word has it that they’re putting their finishing touches on their sophomore record, so in preparation, I implore you all to stan this futuristic and punky track!

Queen Zee – Sissy Fist

These guys are reminiscent of early 2000s rock and grunge, with a new twang to their sound. The track consists of alarming percussion, roaring siren-like guitar solos, and anger towards the oppressing system that bring the queer community down. It stands as an anthem to those people, raising their sissy fists against those who stand against them!

Punish Yourself – Suck My TV

Want to live your cyber goth fantasy? This song will have you rhythmically flailing your arms like the most professional EDM choreographer with its hypnotizing, computer-driven synthesizers and metal inspired vocals. A forewarning, this track is not for the faint-hearted. Are you willing to take the risk?

Slayyyter – Daddy AF

Now, hear me out, this song slams and rightfully deserves its place in some sort of hall of fame soul for its composition. But this song about being vitalized, realized, and over all-powerful is such a mood, with the most pornographic yet intricate lyrics. It’ll take a couple of playthroughs to get used to, but I’m sure it resonates with a huge pool of people – because who doesn’t want to feel like a baller that fucks models and lives like a full-on heathen?
