VIDEO PREMIERE: DREAMDIVE ‘CAN’T TRUST’
Meet pop-rock trio band DREAMDIVE, hailing from the streets of New York City and serving us with catchy pop vocals with driving rock instrumentation, a union that reaffirms the longevity of organic rock instrumentation while delivering pop earworms.
Drummer/songwriter Tucker Jennings who set up DREAMDIVE after his former band Call Security parted ways in 2018; talks to us about searching for bandmates on Instagram, sacrifices and making music that pays the bills. Tucker is joined in DREAMDIVE by front-woman Alexandra Starr, named a rising star of Long Beach by Long Beach Magazine, and guitarist/producer Danny Sullivan of Brooklyn-based bands Tallbird, UV Rays, and Eli Sundae.
Whilst the band are working on their debut EP they have gifted us with their single ‘Can’t Trust’ which is set for release on Friday 31st May and we are pleased to premiere the visuals to go with the track.
‘Can’t Trust’ is a track about accepting unfortunate truths and saying goodbye to things once cherished. What is the one cherished thing that each of you have had to say goodbye to, in order to get to where you are today?
I think to some extent we have all had to sacrifice a level of stability. I think the only way you can make it as a musician is by pursuing it full force, which means investing everything you have in it. The older I get, the scarier it becomes putting all my eggs in one basket, but I believe in it, so it’s worth it.
How did you recruit Alexandra and Danny to join DREAMDIVE and how did you know they were going to be a good fit?
After the breakup of my last band, I spent a mind-numbing amount of hours scouring the internet looking for the right people to try and start a new exciting band with. After about six months of looking, I reached out to Alex and Danny on Instagram, and I couldn’t be happier with how we seem to fit together as a group, considering the rather unusual way we formed. Honestly, I’ve just been feeling really lucky that they turned out to be the awesome people that they are, bearing in mind I reached out based on their musicality.
What can we expect from your debut EP which you are currently working on?
Right now we are working on a batch of high energy anthems. I’m really excited about them–fingers crossed they come out as well as I hope they will. I think “Can’t Trust” illustrates the core instrumentation that exists for our three-piece rock band, and the next batch is going to show what kind of sounds we intend to incorporate into that sound, building upon those elements.
You guys are based in New York City, the city where you either make it or break it. How do you think this influences your music? Do you make your music with a certain audience in mind?
My bandmates are NYC based but I’m currently in Connecticut commuting to practice, etc. I’m not sure it would be fair for me to answer that until I move to the city in the fall.
What is your goal as a band and you feel like you are on track?
I’ve always been in awe of how powerful music is as an art form. A song can make an entire room full of people feel the same overpowering emotion in just one instant. Our goal is to be able to participate in that in a way that pays our bills.
