Demur Decks by Julia Church 03.06.2019

Following her launch show in Herne Hill, her takeover over of our Instagram last week and the release of her debut single ‘Square1’, Julia Church is the hot girl of the moment. ‘Square 1’ is still picking up in streaming numbers and we can certainly see ‘Square 1’ following suit of Julia’s previous works which has charted on South African Radio and received 1.5 million plays on Soundcloud.

Julia is a Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts recent graduate and during her time there she had the opportunity to have a one-to-one songwriting session with Sir Paul McCartney.

Doin’ Time – Lana Del Rey

I love Lana Del Rey, she can literally sing anything and make it sound cool. I think quoting “summertime” in the chorus is genius. It’s awesome hearing one of the most timeless jazz standards used in such a subtle, modern way. Also, the drum groove is infectious.

Ice Cream – MIKA

It’s been 12 years since “Grace Kelly” and honestly, not much has changed…but in a good way. I genuinely love his lyrics, they’re so interesting and humorous but in a really clever way. This chorus melody and use of backing vocals is catchy as hell, too. This is going to be a sick summer record for sure.

Call Out My Name (Acapella) – The Weeknd

I think doing an acapella version of this song is a really interesting move from The Weeknd. It’s easy for artists to rely heavily on production to carry a song, and I think this is true for a lot of The Weeknd’s records. In saying this, I think it really works as the melody is strong. I love it as it’s haunting and shows a different side to his music.

Something Real – Andreya Triana

I am obsessed with this song. Andreya sings each word with such purpose and its such a classic, well-written song delivered in a really modern way. Besides her voice being a total show-stopper, the simplicity of the stripped back verses makes the chorus a complete knockout! This hit me right in the feels. Love!

This is Us – DJ Khaled X SZA

Sampling Outkast is risky, but this is sick. It’s almost unfair as using such a classic, instantly recognizable instrumental like this means you don’t have to do much to make it epic, but they did that and a bit more. The chorus melody is striking and memorable and honestly, anything SZA is involved in, I’m probably going to fall in love with so this has my vote.

Square 1 – Julia Church

‘Square 1′ is my nostalgic anecdote of my young teenage years and falling in love for the first time. Now, as a twenty-something trying to navigate my life from a seemingly new perspective, it’s also the realization that I haven’t really grown up at all.
