Moonshine Moods: Spritz, A Refreshing Playlist

What a time to be alive! We’re having another last minute summer heatwave, a no deal Brexit seems to be on the horizon, Taylor Swift’s just released an 18 track album that’s actually pretty decent, and Jupiter is out of retrograde!

But what does that mean for you? Well, it really depends. We seem to be floating about in a really complicated period in history where there’s a lot going wrong, little going right, and we’re all thoroughly aware of it but don’t have to faculty to make the necessary changes to literally stop the world burning.

It’s like we need a burst of fresh air, or a spritz of water in our faces to offer us some clarity and maybe offer a distraction from everything crazy and unfathomable that’s going on (I mean, it was a really, really decent 18 track album).

So, I give you these songs in hopes that they will somehow give you some clarity in these trying times, whether that’s for deep reflection, zoning out, or just to let loose.

Greentea Peng – Downers

It’s like Greentea Peng is the modern-day superhero here to burst the bubble of people living in this anxious and materialistic world, proving with each track that not everyone’s flawless or cool all the time, and there is solace in reviewing that. I feel like the track Downers really embodies this whereby Greentea makes a raw and heavy-hearted reflection on our culture’s unwavering need to live high within a vapid and vacant world.

Doja Cat and Tyga – Juicy

How often does a booty bumping anthem come out, shaking you to your very core? Very often, if you’re anything like me. That being said, with so many songs theming around having the thickest of assets it’s hard for an artist to make a lasting mark. However, Doja Cat has a quirky and lighthearted way of writing absolute bops that worm their way into your brain for months on end.

Jorja Smith – Be Honest

When this track dropped you better believe I was expecting another soft and soul-wrenching song about love, but what I was given was a completely sultry and sweltering. Needless to say, I was surprised by the sheer maturity that Smith adopted in only a few months – why would I expect anything less?

Aly and Aj – Church

Remember back in the day when Disney stars sold their soul just to branch out into mainstream music? Unlike Miley or the Jo Bros however, the sibling duo Aly and Aj banged out pretty poignant and intricate music. And that momentum is still building up today. This extremely emotive and reflective track about debauchery and sin needing to be absolved is sure to get everyone in their feelings, mirroring the sentiment you get walking back home from the sesh at 7 AM on a Wednesday.

Deaton Chris Anthony – Sonshine

If you like ambient, electronic hip-hop inspired music that you can just zone out to, then this is the song for you. Although, pay a little attention and you’ll find yourself completely enamoured by the the theme of the song and its heartfelt lyrics. There’s not much out by Deaton Chris Anthony, but keep your eyes on this one! I’m certain great things will follow!

beabadoobee – She Plays Bass

She Plays Bass is sure to make you reminisce your angsty pop punk days when everyone had neon coloured hair and was just so damn misunderstood. It’s simple and mellow with lyrics about being into somebody so out of this world that you wish you were like them – but what really carries the track is its interesting melody and catchy hook that’ll have you idly air-guitaring along.

Caroline Polachek – Ocean of Tears

One of the coolest and well tailored tracks I’ve come across in a while. Polachek’s breathy vocals have a luring tonality to them, kind of like a siren at sea, and lyrically she’s quite the wordsmith. But underneath that all is a fantastically produced and stripped back electro trap type beat that really transports you to wherever it is that Polachek wants to take you.
